Gravy Master® Cup-a-soup® or Cup-o-Noodles® Contains loads of MSG. Many soups including the popular Campbell’s soup (which is marketed heavily to children) contains MSG. The ingredients in canned and packaged soups are not fresh so they often reply on MSG to “enhance” the flavor of the soup. Feeding MSG rich foods like this contributes to a number of health problems such as obesity, concentration issues, headaches, and fatigue. With such a tremendous choice of snack foods lets avoid those that we know are harmful like Cup o Noodles that contain MSG.
Just like Doritos brand chips, Taco Bell’s Doritos Nacho Cheese Taco Shells contain MSG. In addition to the seasoned meat that Taco Bell uses which contains autolyzed yeast – which contains free glutamate – this shell gives us a double dose of MSG If Taco Bell used quality ingredients in their “food” they would not need to rely on artificial flavor enhancers to make something tasty that is not. Why we need to have this chemical in so many of our foods is hard to understand. It is one thing to eat foods that lack certain healthy ingredients but an entirely different matter when our foods contain harmful ingredients. MSG Report urges consumers to make it clear that we want foods free from MSG be cause, quite simply, it is unsafe and unhealthy.
MSG is an excitotoxin that causes brain damage
MSG is a food additive found in almost all commercially prepared and packaged food. It supercharges the taste of food, but not in the way you would think. MSG operates on the brain, fooling it into thinking food tastes really great. MSG is an excitotoxin in the brain, meaning that it over stimulates the brain causing the production of excessive amounts of dopamine. This creates a drug-like rush that provides a brief sensation of well being. It is highly addictive, causing its consumers to keep coming back for more and end up overeating. In the process, brain cells are destroyed.
Because MSG damages the brain and alters the ability of the brain to respond to the signal from the hormone leptin that satiety has occurred, it is a prime culprit in the epidemic of obesity that has everyone scratching their heads as to cause. Several research studies have shown that ingestion of MSG induces obesity in rats. In fact, when researchers want to fatten up lab rats for experiments, they feed them MSG because its effect is so predictable and rats will bulk up with regularity. MSG destroys the hard wiring in the brain of a rat like it does in the brain of a person.
Corporations that sell processed food love MSG because it makes cheap ingredients taste great. The success of their highly addictive branded flavors depends on their ability to stimulate the brain and create a repetitive response to these products. Instead of creating a quality product that tastes good on its own merits, processed food producers just lace a low integrity food product with MSG without regard for the negative effects it will have on the person who eats this product.
One of corporate America’s best friends, the FDA, has said for many years that consumption of MSG is safe, and has condoned its use as an additive flavor enhancer in countless processed and branded food products. As obesity has reached epidemic proportions in American society, the FDA has purposefully ignored the steady stream of research showing its obesity producing effects. WHY is the US government OK with MSG in our food, especially when obesity and diabetes appear to be a problems they would like to address? Good question.
Oscar Mayer Bologna Made With Chicken & Pork contains MSG. If you read the ingredients, though, they have skillfully hidden this from you. Notice the words Autolyzed Yeast. This is a process that creates a substance from Yeast that contains significant amounts of MSG. Since autolized yeast is not pure MSG the manufacturers in America do not have to list MSG on the list of ingredients. How convenient. The fact is, though, when you eat a product that contains autolized yeast you are absolutely eating MSG. We hope one day the government of the United States will do its job of protecting citizens from this loophole and force manufacturers of garbage food that they need to at least inform customers of the harmful substances that the product contains. For now, we have the MSG Report!
Dollar General stores will be happy to sell you a bag of MSG popcorn for only $1. Great deal if you are looking for a daily dose of neurological chemicals designed to fool your taste buds into believing you are eating something delicious. Personally, we feel that Dollar General stores can do better than this. The bag boasts “Perfectly Popped” and “O Grams Trans Fat” trying to paint the illusion that this is a healthy product. It is unhealthy and we recommend that you give your kids something better than this. MSG is an unhealthy chemical with known adverse side effects and many unknown long term effects.
Ac’cent is a product by S&G Foods which is essentially pure MSG. Ironically, nowhere on their website is MSG mentioned. They refer to Glutamate as a “naturally occurring substance” but also fail to use the word monosodium anywhere. Are they hiding something? If our cigarette companies advertised their products as “all natural plant products” and did not mention the word tobacco it would surely be seen as deceptive. Why Ac’cent can market pure MSG as a natural spice when it is neither natural or a spice is difficult to understand. Since S&G Foods won’t tell you, we will: Ac’cent is MSG, Ac’cent is MSG, Ac’cent is MSG! There. We said it.
Even more difficult to understand is this NBC News video featured on the Ac’cent website HERE which appears to celebrate a new thing called UMAMI (which is simply the Japanese term for MSG coined in 1908). The entire video goes on and on about how great this substance is yet the word MSG is only mentioned once. “Umami”, the expert said “contains some MSG”. How this blatant attempt to manipulate consumers’ views of MSG is being tolerated is downright abuse of NBC News’ authority as a legitimate media channel. Just in case anyone is unclear, UMAMI is MSG, Ac’cent is MSG, and it is produced through industrial chemical manufacturing and is not natural or healthy by any stretch of the imagination.
John Erb, author of The Slow Poisoning of America draws a link between MSG and autism among other health dangers. He states:
MSG is an amino acid that affects almost every major system and organ in the body. Glutamate receptors trigger many different responses and can be over stimulated to cause cell death and other systemic problems. For thirty years, scientists and researchers have used MSG in their experiments to purposely create obese and pre-diabetic test subjects, trigger epileptic seizures, create ischemic stroles, and destroy cell tissues in vivo and in vitro. The amount of studies that use MSG to cause negative effects in test subjects numbers over one thousand, published in a variety of medical and scientific journals in over a dozen different countries.
“There is mounting evidence that not only the rise in human obesity and diabetes is linked to the ingestion of Monosodium Glutamate, but the increase in Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder as well.
“In light of the overwhelming evidence showing the detrimental effects of the food additive MSG, it is requested that the FAO/WHO’s Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) remove monosodium glutamate (and ingredients that contain MSG) from the allowable additives list of the Codex Alimentarius, and have it banned from vaccines as well….
“Because food manufacturers do not have to list the amount of MSG on their packaging, there is no way of knowing how much a normal child or adult would ingest in a day’s period. According to industry research 0.6% added to food is optimal for making people eat progressively more and faster… If this is the case, as much as .6% of a person’s daily diet could be made up of MSG. In a daily intake of 2 kgs of laced food the adult or child would receive a 12 gram dose of monosodium glutamate. A 12 gram dosage of MSG is lethal to a one kg rat.
In a number of recent studies MSG was not only linked to adverse side effects such as headaches and muscular pain but to obesity. The unhealthy effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG) on the human body are becoming more evident as more studies are conducted. The latest studies, connecting MSG intake to obesity, is only the latest indicator that MSG should be avoided. It is extremely difficult to avoid eating MSG as it is in so many of our foods, and often not labeled. Even the phrase “No MSG Added” can be misleading, as the ingredients (prepackaged sauces) often contain MSG. So, if a sauce which contains MSG is an ingredient and MSG is not added afterwards the product label can say “No MSG Added” when it, in fact, does contain MSG. Here is a link to a recent article discussing the link between MSG and obesity:
Campbell’s Noodle Soup contains MSG. Mothers across the nation are feeding Campbell’s noodle soup to their children thinking it is healthy when, in fact, it contains a known neuro-stimulant with known adverse side effects and an unknown impact on long-term health. Campbell states directly on their website:
“Its been used safely for more than a century. MSG is a common flavor enhancer added by chefs and food manufacturers alike” From Campbell’s FAQ Page
There you have it. Campbell’s noodle soup must be safe if MSG has been used for more than a century and it is added by chefs and food manufacturers. Maybe Coke should put Cocaine back in Coca Cola as they did a hundred years ago. Now, more than ever, we must stay informed and protect the health of our children by being skeptical of the foods we buy.
